Marathon · 1960s

Abebe Bikila

Won the Olympic marathon barefoot, then won the next one too.

Barefoot
Rome Olympic gold, 1960

Rome

In 1960 he ran the Olympic marathon barefoot through Rome, having found the shoes he was offered uncomfortable, and won it in a world best. He was a late addition to the Ethiopian team.

Tokyo

Four years later he won again, this time in shoes, and this time forty days after an appendectomy. He finished, then did calisthenics on the infield. First man to win the Olympic marathon twice.

What came after

A car accident in 1969 left him paralysed. He competed in archery and sled events afterwards and died in 1973, at 41. The full story is not a highlight reel and this app does not present it as one.

The composure

What the Rome footage shows is a runner entirely unbothered by conditions that should have bothered him: no shoes, cobbles, an unfamiliar city, the biggest race of his life. Steadiness under circumstances you did not choose is the checkpoint he belongs to.

What to steal

Conditions you did not choose are still just conditions. Decide what you are doing about them and get on with it.

Where they come up
Checkpoint 06Steady the EngineWon the Rome Olympic marathon in 1960 barefoot, in a world best, as a runner almost nobody in the field knew. Four years later he won again in Tokyo, six weeks after an appendectomy. Both races were run at an even, unbothered rhythm while more decorated runners spent themselves early. Composure that holds when the occasion is enormous.
