Mountain and ultra running · 2000s onward

Kilian Jornet

Redefined how fast a mountain can be moved over, calmly.

8,848m
Everest, twice in one week, 2017

The ascents

Records on Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, Denali and others, plus wins at essentially every major ultra he entered. In 2017 he summited Everest twice inside a week without supplementary oxygen.

Stress, managed rather than avoided

His discipline involves genuine danger, weather that changes in minutes, and decisions made while hypoxic and exhausted. The composure is the skill. Panic in his events has consequences beyond a slow split.

Why he is calm about it

He grew up in a mountain refuge in the Pyrenees and has been moving over that terrain since he was a small child. It is a useful corrective to the idea that composure is a personality: his is the product of an enormous amount of accumulated exposure.

The honest part

He has also spoken about the environmental cost of the sport he helped popularise, and about turning back from objectives. Knowing when to stop is part of the same skill as knowing when to push.

What to steal

Composure comes from exposure. You get calm in hard conditions by spending time in hard conditions.
